SFDA and other departments jointly carried out supervision for Olympic food safety assurance



On Feb. 25-27, 2008, the State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) organized the Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Health, State Administration for Industry and Commerce, General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine and National Office of Rectification and Standardization of Market Economic Order to supervise the management index of Olympic food safety assurance for Olympic host and co-host cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Qingdao, Shenyang and Qinhuangdao by six supervision groups. At the preparatory meeting of the supervision for Olympic food safety assurance held on Feb. 25, Liu Yi, Deputy Commissioner of SFDA put forward definite requirements for the supervision work. Liu Yi, SFDA Deputy Commissioner, led the Beijing supervision group to supervise five sectors: comprehensive supervision, planting and breeding, production and processing, circulation, catering consumption. 

During the supervision, each supervision group listened to the reports of the local Food Safety Commissions on the Olympic food safety assurance situation, examined related data, made an on-site inspection for the sectors of comprehensive supervision, plating and breeding, production and processing, circulation and catering consumption of dozens of units and enterprises, and held the forum attended by relevant persons. Each local government attached high importance to the Olympic food safety assurance work, and enhanced the assurance for Olympic food safety. Beijing Municipal Government formulated the Beijing Olympic Food Safety Action Outline, intensified the monitoring for Olympic food, established and improved the supervision network, responsibility system, testing system, credit system for capital's food safety, started the Olympic food safety monitoring and tracing system and intensified the monitoring of prohibited substances contained in the food to ensure the safety of Olympic food. Shanghai food safety monitoring network has been basically formed, which can monitor the pathogen and tableware pollution situation of Olympic designated hotels and restaurants, and dining units around the competition venues quickly and accurately. At the same time, Shanghai Municipal Government laid stress on establishing public notification system, increase the intensity of public supervision, and improve food safety awareness of the public through establishing food safety model districts, building up food safety models and strengthening publicity in various ways. Tianjin, Shenyang, Qingdao and Qinhuangdao have established guarantee mechanisms and measures to ensure the Olympic food safety.

During the supervision, some problems need to be improved have also been found. Each local government indicated that they would further take effective measures to ensure Olympic food safety.

The supervision for Olympic food safety assurance is one of the tasks of SFDA to carry out Olympic food safety assurance project. In December 2007, the SFDA formulated the Working Scheme for the Supervision for Olympic Food Safety Assurance. The supervision work mainly includes product testing, secret inspection and supervision of the management index.
