On the afternoon of Dec.10, 2007, a delegation led by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Mike Leavitt paid a visit to Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, and Secretary Mike Leavitt gave a wonderful speech to the teachers and students of the university.
Qu Shuhui, head of SFDA Discipline Inspection Group of CPC Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, Li Daning, deputy director-general of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Professor Zheng Shouzeng, president of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine expressed their welcome to the delegation. The delegation paid a visit to the Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) and Guoyitang TCM Clinic of the university. During the visit, Mike Leavitt listened to the explanations attentively, and asked questions from time to time, showing great interest in traditional Chinese medicine.
After the visit, Secretary Leavitt gave a wonderful speech to the teachers and students of the university. His speech was focused on food and drug safety, fully highlighting the importance of medical care and food and drug safety, and illustrating the necessity to conduct global exchange and cooperation, sufficient sharing of technologies and resources, and mutual coordination and assistance in food and drug safety supervision. According to Secretary Leavitt, the Chinese and US governments will sign very important cooperation agreements. One is about drugs and medical devices, and the other is about food and feed. In the process of the speech, he had a heated and active Q&A interaction with the teachers and students on issues such as medical care, relationship between TCM and western medicine, TCM research, and safety guarantee for the Olympics.
More than 10 people accompanied Secretary Leavitt during the visit, including Andrew von Eschenbach, Commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and Rich McKeown, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
