Entrusted by Premier Wen Jiabao, Vice Premier Wu Yi, on behalf of the State Council, reported the food safety and its supervision to the 16th Session of the Standing Committee of the Tenth National People's Congress on June 29, 2005. Wu Yi said that some deep-rooted problems remain unsolved and the food safety is still a serious challenge though China's overall food safety conditions are improving. The next step will involve the work in seven key areas. In the next three to five years, the State Council will try to improve food production and distribution significantly and effectively curb the crimes of producing and selling counterfeited, false or bad-quality food and reduce food safety accidents.
1. Strengthen pollution source control during agricultural produce manufacturing
2. Crack down on producing and selling counterfeited, false and bad-quality food during food production and processing
3. Further rectify and standardize food circulation
4. Strengthen supervision and examination of food consumption
5. Investigate serious food safety offenses as required by laws
6. Strengthen food safety publicity and social monitoring
7. Actively explore a long-term mechanism for food safety
